Uplifting Black Heroes of Child Welfare
February 07, 2024
This month we celebrate Black History Month to honor African American heritage in the United States and share stories of Black achievement. We honor the men and women who blazed trails in our country, pushing us forward and recognize their bravery and the threats they faced to do so. It is especially important for those in the child welfare community to recognize these brave activists and reformists, as Black children are overrepresented in the child welfare system relative to the general population. To better serve Black children and reduce their risk of entering the system it is critical that we respect and embrace their perspective, culture, and history. In celebration of Black History Month, we’ve chosen to elevate the stories of Black men and women who played a significant role in improving the lives of children and advancing both the fields of social work and child welfare. Let us celebrate their achievements, continue their work, and strive for continued progress in their memories.

CASA’s represent the child in court, school, health checkups and other areas where children would need adult support. They are the eyes and ears of the court on behalf of a child. These volunteers are unbiased and have the child’s best interests in mind but nurturing & supporting the children in the face of adversity.Without having someone in their corner, to cheer them on, check up on situations and be able to confide in, children can be misrepresented and feel alone. This makes the role of the CASA very important, not only for the judge who they are reporting to but also the child(ren) who needs the attention and care of the adult to develop. These caring volunteers minimize negative situations and provide positive relationships and experiences for the child(ren) in care. As a community, we must provide opportunities for children and youth in the foster system to overcome family situations and adverse childhood experiences that could potentially negatively affect their lives.
