A CASA's view on Grandparent's Day; Written by Dixie Hornstein.

"As a grandmother, I have the experience of raising my own children, and then watching and helping them raise and nurture their children. I have watched my brothers and sisters raise their children, and many friends raise their families. While navigating life’s challenges over multiple decades, I have become more patient, persevering and resilient.

I believe these life experiences lend a special perspective to how, as a grandmother, I interact with CASA clients and their families. As a CASA, I have found that most of the children relate to me as they would relate to a grandmother. They seem to feel safe. They seem to know that I am listening to them without judgement, and that I am there for them in a very difficult family situation.

I became a CASA because I believe that every child should be loved and nurtured, and have the opportunity to be the best that they can be. And I know that sometimes families are caught up in situations not created by the children, but of huge impact to the children. I hope that I am giving these children a voice, and a better chance.
