At CASA, we believe that every child deserves a voice—someone who will stand by them, advocate for their best interests, and offer consistent support through uncertain times. This month, we shine a light on one of our dedicated volunteers who embodies the spirit of CASA through compassion, commitment, and connection.

Meet Kori: A Year of Service, A Lifetime of Impact

With just over a year of service, Kori has already made a meaningful difference in the lives of three children across two families. Her journey with CASA began with a desire to give back, and it has since blossomed into a deeply personal and transformative experience.

Beyond the Lab: A Life of Curiosity and Care

By day, Kori is a Research Scientist and Laboratory Manager in a Biomedical Engineering Lab, studying failure mechanisms in total joint replacements. But outside the lab, she is a vibrant individual who enjoys staying physically active, traveling, tending to orchids, reading, and cherishing time with family.

A Rainy Day, A Lasting Memory

One of Kori’s most treasured CASA memories came on a rainy day. While instinct said to stay indoors, her CASA child’s enthusiasm led them outside to play catch in the rain. “There’s something magical and spontaneous about playing in the rain,” she shared. “It turned into one of my most valuable visits with this child.” That moment, simple yet profound, became a symbol of trust, joy, and connection—hallmarks of what CASA strives to foster in every child’s life.

Advice for Future Advocates: Just Show Up

When asked what advice she would give to someone considering becoming a CASA volunteer, Kori’s message was clear and heartfelt:
“Do not let fear hold you back. You do not need special credentials. You simply need to be willing to listen, learn, and show up. The training will give you the tools, the program will provide support, but your heart and dedication are what will make the real difference.”

A Moment of Realization: The CASA Difference

In her second case, Kori faced a complex situation involving many professionals. Initially unsure of her impact, she focused on building a trusting relationship with the child. Then came a powerful moment: the child’s guardian shared that while the child struggled with many of the adults in his life, he looked forward to visits with Kori.
“Hearing that was so impactful to me,” Kori reflected. “We are offered the opportunity to interact with a child without an agenda, an overloaded caseload, or expectations. That allows us to cultivate a sense of safety and connection.”

Why CASA Matters

Kori’s story is a testament to the unique and vital role CASA volunteers play. They are not just observers—they are consistent, caring adults who help children feel seen, heard, and valued. Their presence can be the difference between feeling lost in the system and finding a path forward.
