Today, we are proud to shine a light on Michelle Stinnett, a dedicated volunteer who has been a pillar of support for our community since joining Goochland/Powhatan CASA in June 2024.
In her relatively short time with us, Michelle has already advocated for four families. Her longest case spanned 11 months, proving that she is willing to go the distance to ensure children and parents have the resources they need to thrive.
From the Trauma Center to the Courtroom
By day, Michelle is a CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) at a Level 1 Trauma Center. Her professional life is dedicated to caring for people during their most critical moments—a skill set that translates perfectly to her role as a CASA.
A Fearless Spirit
When she isn’t working or volunteering, Michelle is busy crossing items off her "fear-based" bucket list. She recently swam with sharks in the Bahamas, and tandem skydiving is next!
She also enjoys:
- Reading and traveling
- Rock hounding and collecting gems and minerals
Why She Does It: The Power of a Second Chance
Michelle believes in the beauty of reunification. She recalls a powerful moment with a mother in recovery who struggled to see her own worth. After months of Michelle’s steady support and encouragement, the mother told her: "When I look in the mirror, I love the person looking back at me."
"I realized at that moment that sometimes people just need someone to believe in them, to listen to them, and to support them, even through the ugly times," Michelle says. "They get a second chance to be a family because strangers cared enough to help them."
Michelle’s Advice for Potential Volunteers:
"Be prepared. It’s difficult to hold back the tears sometimes... but amazing to watch their successes."
Thank you, Michelle, for your heart, your bravery, and your unwavering commitment to Powhatan families!
